CULBERTSON, Neb. -- Janet Kay Higley, age 60, of Culbertson, passed away at Community Hospital of McCook on Saturday, Jan. 21, 2017.

She was born in Holdrege, Neb., on July 30, 1956, to Rex and Twyla (Jordan) Steinbrink. Janet graduated from Trenton High School in 1974. She attended nursing school in Kearney, receiving her degree as a licensed practical nurse.

On Aug. 17,1974, Janet was united in marriage to Richard Higley in Trenton, Neb. Janet worked in the health care field all her life. She was employed by several nursing homes, including at a pediatric clinic for 11 years in Grand Junction, Colo. She had been employed at El Dorado Manor. Janet's passion was working with geriatric patients.

Janet took a leave of absence for a couple of years to travel and help Richard with his over-the-road trucking, traveling from the east coast to the west coast. Upon Janet's retirement, the family returned to Nebraska in 2013. Janet rescued a small dog from the McCook Humane Society. She named him Whizzer and he became her close companion while Richard was on the road.

Janet was a member of the Trenton United Methodist Church. She enjoyed crafting, woodworking and gardening.

She was preceded in death by her brother-in-law, Kurt Dailey and sister-in-law, Bonnie Steinbrink.

Janet is survived by her husband, Richard of Culbertson; four sons, Jeffrey Higley and Crystal of Grand Junction, Bradley Higley and Sarah of Arvada, Colo., Jeremy Higley and Nicole of Grand Junction and Jared Higley of Culbertson: two grandchildren, Austin and Alandra; parents, Rex and Twyla Steinbrink of Trenton; six siblings, Connie and Tom Bryant of Wayne, Okla., Diane Dailey and Mark of Chattanooga, Tenn., Rodney and Kim Steinbrink of Scott City, Jan., Carol and Rick Brown of Hayes Center, Neb., Richard and Judy Steinbrink of Garden City, Kan., and Larry Steinbrink and fiancé, Kathy of North Platte, Neb.; parents-in-law, Wayne and Lucille Higley of McCook, Neb.; in-laws, Cheryl Brennan of Stratton, Neb., Marjorie Shepard of Elkhorn, Neb., Donald Higley and Michael Donovan of Washington, D.C., Jim Higley of Palm Springs, Calif., and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at the Trenton United Methodist Church on Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Alisa Parde officiating. A private family inurnment will take place at a later date by the family.

Visitation is at the Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel in Trenton on Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family has designated the Trenton United Methodist Church for memorials in Janet's name. Friends may leave on-line condolences at herrmannfh.com
