Students at McCook Elementary got a surprise this morning on the first day of school: a performance by the McCook High School band, led on to the field, above right, by new instructor Nathan hudson. Students were greeted by the band (of which members don't actually start school until Thursday) playing several songs, along with a performance by the high school cheerleaders and dance team. One of the cheers done by the cheerleaders was well-known to some students, such as first grader Briscoe Garcia, right. Preliminary enrollment numbers at McCook Public Schools this year is 1,430, with 440 at McCook Elementary, 181 at Central, 318 at the junior high and 491 at the high school. These numbers are subject to change slightly, due to kids still being registered and option enrollment students. Kindergarden through ninth grade students started school today, with sophomores through seniors beginning Thursday.
