McCOOK, Neb. -- After 47 years, McCook's golf car dealership is changing hands. Bob and Dee Propes, who have operated Propes Golf Carts Sales and Service since 1969, have sold the business to Terry and Shelley Hoffmaster.

The Hoffmasters -- who assumed ownership May 10 -- have changed the name of the business to Master Carts.

The golf car sales and service firm is located at 1406 West J Street in the spacious building which formerly served as the business location of Al's Army Store and Gary's Country Peddler.

Before purchasing the golf car business, Terry Hoffmaster served as the warehouse manager for Van Diest Supply and Shelley Hoffmaster was an administrative assistant for the Colfer, Wood, Lyons & Wood law practice.

The Hoffmasters are also the owners of Stak 'n Store, the group of storage units located west of Orscheln's.

The hours at Master Carts will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to as needed on Saturday. The new owners' principal business role will remain the same as it was during the Propes' ownership: the sale and service of new and used golf cars,

Bob Propes established the golf car business as a sideline to his teaching career in the late 1960s. The sideline soon grew into a full-time business. continuing through the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and into the first 16 years of the 2000s.

The Propes will keep active in retirement. "We'll find something to do," Bob said. "You just can't sit around." The Propes' son, Scott, who was also active in the business, is exploring other career options.
