Darlene Fern (Orman) Unger

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Darlene Fern (Orman) Unger was born June 30, 1921, at the family farm home in east Hayes County, Nebraska, to Frederick (Fred) Michael Orman and Sylvia Cordelia (Ohlson) Orman. She passed away on Feb. 4, 2016 in Lincoln, Nebraska at the age of 94 years, 7 months and 5 days.

Darlene was baptized as an infant at the St. John's Lutheran country church, where she received her early and adult Christian training along with her parents and siblings. She attended the District 38 country school through eighth grade. She then graduated from Hayes County High School in the spring of 1938 with a Teacher's Certificate, which she used to teach three terms of country grade school in two schools close to her home.

On Nov. 2, 1941, she married Alfred Henry Unger of Red Willow County, Nebraska, at her beautiful parental farmhouse. They spent their first years on a farm in Red Willow County. In the spring of 1944, they moved back to Hayes County. In 1943 and 1944, she was hired again to teach two more terms of school in the same two schools. In the spring of 1950, she and her husband and three little boys moved to her parents' farm, where they continued to live. She loved her family, gardening, sewing, researching and writing family history.

She was a lifelong member of St. John's Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday School, Bible School, was Sunday School Superintendent for many years and a member of Lutheran Ladies Aid and LWML. Her faith in God was the foundation of her life and she and her husband brought up their children in that faith. She lived her life in service of her Savior and was a true testament of her faith until the end.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Alfred who passed away Aug. 13, 2005; one granddaughter, Melanie Unger; her brothers, and sisters-in-law, Floyd and Lillian (Fichtner) Orman, Garald and Juanita (Savage) Orman; her sisters and brothers-in-law, Rhoda and Harry Alber, Ione and Fred Turner, Lorraine and Lonnie Morosic; brothers-in-law, Ted Patterson and Al Wagner.

Darlene is survived by four sons, Fred and wife, Lea of Hayes County, Nebraska, Dr. Don and wife, Karen of Fort Collins, Colorado; Jack and wife, Jerrilynne of McKinney, Texas, and Garald (Jerry) and wife, Beverly of Hayes County, Nebraska; one daughter, Nancy and husband, Bill Jennett of Lincoln, Nebraska; 11 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren; one sister, Ruth Wagner of Ventura California, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be given in her name to the St. John's Lutheran Church (White) Trust.

Visitation will be Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2016, at Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel, McCook, Nebraska, from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. with family greeting friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friends may go online at www.herrmannfh.com to extend condolences to the family.

Funeral services will be Thursday, Feb. 11, 2016, at 11 a.m. at Peace Lutheran Church in McCook with Pastor Tom Albertson officiating. Burial will be in the St. John's White Cemetery in rural Hayes County at 2 p.m.
