The drags are on

Thursday, March 26, 2015

Reversing its earlier decision, the FAA has approved the closing of the Atwood, Kansas, airport to allow drag races during the Atwood Ambassadors' annual "Early Rod Run," the Rawlins County Square Deal newspaper announced today. Shane Carlson, Ambassadors' president, told the Square Deal, "A lot of friends of the rod run worked behind the scenes to get our application re-reviewed, including our U.S. representative, Tim Huelskamp." Ambassadors had feared the loss of approximately 100 cars to the rod run if there were no drag races. The 2015 rod run will be Friday, Saturday and Sunday, May 15, 16 and 17. Show-n-shine in downtown Atwood will be Saturday from 9 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., followed by the drag races from 4 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. Dave Brown, chairman of the Atwood Rawlins County Airport Board, said, "We have done everything possible to have drag races along with the rod run. Now all we need is the cooperation of Mother Nature."
