McCOOK, Neb. -- McCook's "Christmas Toy Box" is in desperate need of doll clothes, from Barbie size to baby dolls.

"We have a lot of naked babies here," Barb Ostrum, "head elf" of the Toy Box effort, chuckled Monday.

Outdoor drop-off locations are still located this week at Alco, Dollar General/Schmick's, McCook Christian Church and WalMart. Inside locations are McCook National Bank, First Central Bank, Eakes Office Supply and Advanced Services.

Barb asks that toys and games with batteries be placed in inside drop-offs or brought to the McCook office of Community Action Partnership of Mid-Nebraska, in the 100 block of West C, to prevent the batteries from freezing and ruining toys.

The gift giveaway is Sunday, starting at 1 p.m., in McCook's Memorial Auditorium at West Fifth and C. Shoppers are asked to not bring sacks, bags and boxes.

Anyone with a need to make a child's Christmas happier is invited to shop.

As volunteers sorted and displayed toys and games Monday, Barb recognized the support that the Toy Box effort has received from Deveny Motors, Whitaker Furniture, Farm Credit Services of America, American Electric, Farrell's Pharmacy and Hallmark Shop, WalMart and its employees, McCook Public Schools' LIFT students and the Boy Scouts.

  • Thanks to Barb and all of the local Santa's who will give smiles to children at Christmas.
