Unlocked vehicles still popular target of thieves
McCOOK, Neb. -- Local law enforcement agencies have been dealing with a rash of recent thefts involving criminals targeting unlocked vehicles parked both at area homes and at local businesses. McCook Police Department Sr. Sgt. Kevin Darling asked citizens during the monthly Coffee with a Cop meeting, Tuesday morning at McDonald's, to please emphasize locking their vehicles.
Sgt. Darling reiterated comments made in recent weeks indicating the thieves had a preference for unlocked vehicles and eliminating that convenience would go a long way in combating the criminal activity.
City Councilman-elect Gene Weedin joined Sgt. Darling for the coffee meeting and visited with several local residents about his background and vision for the future.
Weedin is a 16-year McCook resident and said several people he looked up to had approached him about running for City Council. Weedin said he saw the office as an opportunity for him to give back to the community that had provided so much to him over the years.
Weedin is serving his third term as President of the Southwest Nebraska Community Theater Association and will be sworn into office as a McCook City Councilman during the Dec. 1, 2014, meeting.
Weedin praised City Council for doing a wonderful job for McCook in recent years and said he was looking forward to making his own contribution in what will be his first experience serving in public office.
Ensuring the city has everything it needs to maintain its infrastructure related to water, sewer and roads is paramount, according to Weedin, who said after that he would like to focus on stimulating opportunities for housing and local business.
"Doing everything we can to encourage people to move to McCook and everything we can to foster and grow local business. If we can do that, I think exciting things are going to happen," Weedin said.
