LINCOLN, Neb. -- Christopher John Bauer, age 42, of Lincoln, formerly of Culbertson, Nebraska, died at Indiana University Hospital in Indianapolis on Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2014, after a long battle with cancer.

Christopher was born in McCook, Nebraska, on July 4, 1972, to Ron and Vicki (Weaver) Bauer. He attended and graduated from Culbertson High School in 1990. Growing up, Chris was involved in baseball in Culbertson. He later played for the McCook Legion baseball team. He attended Colby Community College for two years, before transferring to the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. Chris played baseball at Colby and later for the Huskers. He attained his master's degree in agronomy.

Chris was married to Stephanie Christiansen, but the marriage ended several years later.

Chris was employed by the USDA during college, working until 2012. Chris was an avid sportsman, enjoying the outdoors. He belonged to Pheasants Forever and Ducks Unlimited. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity United Methodist Church in Culbertson. Chris played softball, baseball and enjoying a passion for hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed running, biking and golf. Chris enjoyed his two special pets, his dog, Buster and his canary, Fuzz.

Chris will be remembered for his smile, kindness, love and concern for others.

Chris was preceded in death by his grandparents, Melvin and Clarice Bauer.

He is survived by his parents, Ron and Vicki Bauer of Ord, Nebraska; brother, Mike and wife, Elizabeth of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; sister, Lisa and husband, Aaron Shadley of Omaha; fiancé, Kris Pensick of Lincoln; grandparents, Don and Norma Sitzman of Culbertson; and nieces and nephews.

Chris's request was to be cremated. Memorial services will be at Trinity United Methodist Church in Culbertson on Saturday, Aug. 23, 2014, at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor John Lewis officiating. A private family inurnment will take place at a future date.

Friends may sign a memorial book at the Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel in McCook on Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friends may leave on-line condolences at herrmannfh.com. Memorials maybe left in Chris's name at the Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel.
