Jerry Petersen, below left, and his wife, Anastasia, family and friends await the raising of the new 50-foot-tall, 9-ton cross on the "Jesus Saves" hill west of Cambridge, Nebraska, Good Friday evening. Jerry told those gathered at the base of the hill for the cross's dedication that he originally thought he'd put a bull up there, then he thought maybe a big red "N." Evidently, however, something told him to put those straight lines in a different direction, and he envisioned the cross. Friend, welder and engineer Herb Besler brought Jerry's vision to life. Speakers at the dedication were Bill Weaver, Sen. Mark Christensen, Cambridge Mayor Mark Harpst, and Hastings College President Don Jackson, who helped believer Ira Hecox construct the "Jesus Saves" sign. The Rev. Jeff Wulf sang "The Old Rugged Cross."
